Do you need a bevel-edged solid? In many cases the tool BEVEL gives you an awkward shape. So let’s understand together the correct steps to have the perfect rounded bevel.

0 – Bevel the corner

Let’s for example imagine that you need to make a fillet in this solid. You want to have a rounded corner. Go in EDIT MODE and select bevel. Select the edge you want to bevel an pull the blue level.

1 – but the bevel is asymmetrical, why?

in many cases, when you pull the level, the bevel does not result perfectly symmetrical but more diagonal as the example below, and – in case of many segments – in plan is like an eclipse.

2 – correct the scale

The reason of this behaviour is the different scale of the object along the X, Y and Z axis. See the arrow in the first image on the left. So select the object and then go to: object, apply, scale and click it. You will have the scale set to 1, 1, 1 without changing the object aspect. Shortcut to do so: CTRL+A.

3 – let’s bevel again

Once you applied the correct scale, repeat the same steps of the beginning, by selecting the solid, going into EDIT mode, selecting the edge and pulling the level with BEVEL tool.

When you release the level, focus on the left side of the screen: there will be a small menu on which you can select the segments of the corner, and its bigness: radious 2, 3… and so on. In the example below, I choose to have a bevel with a bigness of 2 cm (2 cm of radious) and adding many segments it appears to be a rounded corner. I didn’t modify other parameters.

Well done!
